Apr 8th, 2002 Disk Quotas on Mail Server

This week we are implementing disk quotas on the email servers. We expect this to be complete by Friday the 12th April, 2002.

These quotas will limit how much email the servers will store for you which means that any email received after you have reached the maximum allowed for your mailbox will be rejected by our servers.

The quotas we are setting will be as follows:

    for non subscription accounts: 10MB
    for subscription accounts: 20MB

In addition to this there will be a buffer of 5MB over the above limits however this extra 5MB is limited to 7 days.

With these new quotas it is more important than ever that you ensure that you regularly connect to our mail server and download your email.

Your should also make sure that you have not configured your mail client or POP3 download agent to leave the mail on the server after download.

Feb 27th, 2002 FormMail scripts are now BANNED

For several days now I have been fighting a loosing battle against spammers who have been exploiting the FormMail script from Matt's Archives.

This script is very poorly written and even after being altered remains a problem. Frankly I have had enough. This script is now banned. I have altered the permissions of every formmail script on our servers that I could find.

Any user who uploads a formmail script under another name will be considered to have deliberately breached the anti-spam sections of our Terms and Conditions and we will act appropriately on that basis.

Tomorrow evening I will announce details of a replacement that I have written to be secure. This will be available from a common CGI facility to all users.

January 12th 2001 .me.uk domains

Nominet are launching .me.uk domains at midnight tomorrow .

There is a higher initial charge that reduces over 6 months to the same charge as .co.uk domains in order to deter speculators ??

For the first month the registration charge will be £70.00 for 2 years. It will reduce by about £10 per month until July when it will be £12.50 for 2 years, but I guess all the good ones will be gone.

If anyone wants a domain registering in the initial request to Nominet, then please email, not forgetting that we cant guarantee to get them , we or Nominet may have a prior request.

We will set up a charge for you to pay before requesting the domain and will refund you if the request is unsuccessful.

There is no apparent restriction on what you can register apart from no 2 letter 3rd level domains.

December 18th 2001Mailing Lists

We have set up two mailing lists for uklinux.net users.
The first is a general uklinux users mailing list where users can discuss issues, problems and suggestions, and get help from other users in the hope of developing the community spirit of our users.

You can subscribe to this list at :- http://community.uklinux.net/mailman/listinfo/users

The second is, as a result of user suggestions, a mailing list for status announcements, if you want to be notified when things are (or arent) happening then subscribe to this list, and you will receive an email copy of status announcements.
If there is a fault with mailman or sendmail or other parts of the mail system then you will only get the email when the fault is fixed.
You can subscribe to this list at :- http://community.uklinux.net/mailman/listinfo/status

December 14th, 2001 Dial in modems

We have now finished a period of testing on our new dialup platform and are pleased to annnounce that all seems ok.
The new number for dialin is :- 0845 6042086. This number should support most modem types including ISDN and Dual Channel ISDN.

We also now support CHAP authentication, as well as PAP. If you have problems with the new number not allowing you in then it may be because your details are not in the CHAP database - this can be remedied by going into myaccount and changing your password, even to the same as before, or by telling your system to only use PAP - or 'use secure authentication' in Microsoft speak. We dont support MS-CHAP.

If you cannot connect to the new number then please continue to use the old ones (see support page for details) and send an email to support@uklinux.net giving details of the problems.

You should also update the dns servers you use to :- 80.84.72.20 and 80.84.64.20.

December 14th, 2001 - Expected outage

We've been advised that there is likely to be a short outage on our connectivity from our Stockport NOC between 03:00 and 07:00 on Tuesday 18th December 2001. The outage should last no more than 10 minutes.

This is to enable updates to be made to the telco switches following serious problems earlier this month.

During the outage all web sites will be unavailable however email and news services will continue to operate.

November 23rd, 2001 - Network News

uklinux.net are delighted to announce the birth of our new network - 80.84.64.0 / 21 today
It joins its sibling 80.84.72.0 / 21 which we commissioned a couple of weeks ago and which is already hosting our main mail and news server in our new location in Central Manchester.
These will allow us to follow our policy of continuous improvement of our service and to be able offer a range of new facilities including (possibly) virtual servers, shell accounts, and (definitely) colocation / dedicated / HA servers.

We will also now be able to offer Surftime access which we'll be announcing formally in a week or so.

September 12th, 2001 - Procmail

We have now completed the first stage of the web based procmail configuration utility. Subscription users can now use https://www.uklinux.net/procmail to install or edit their procmail configuration files.
Stage two will be additions to add (simple) rules to the procmail configuration files.

September 7th, 2001

The version of phpmyadmin we are offering has been upgraded to version 2.2

August 6th, 2001

We have scheduled a reboot of the server hosting subscription based accounts web sites for 7pm tomorrow evening for essential maintainance.

We anticipate approximately 30 minutes downtime.

August 3rd, 2001

It is now a year since uklinux.net started offering subscription based hosting accounts and in that time we have increased the range of services and facilties offered to subscription members, including the recent additions of SMTP mail delivery and Authenticated SMTP.

Having taken the opportunity to rationalise the membership charges and also consider the fact that we having to account for VAT on the membership charges we are making the following changes to the membership charges from 17th August. Please note that all existing subscribing members will be invited to renew their membership at the same price they paid last year as long as they pay for the renewal before the current membership expiry date. This will be true until 17th August 2002 :)

Subscription Membership Charges from 17th August 2001

Standard Membership £30.00
Silver Membership* £75.00 or £7.50 per month
Gold Membership* £130.00 or £13.00 per month
Ecommerce Membership** £225.00 or £22.50 per month
Platinum Membership £300.00 or £30.00 per month

* Silver and Gold memberships will now include the initial registration or transfer of a domain (.com,.net,.org,.co.uk,.org.uk) in the cost of membership
** E-commerce membership will now include the use of the ssl certificate and an ssl hosted subdomain of ukssl.com as well as the intial registration or transfer of a domain.
Any comments or suggestions to admin@uklinux.net :)

July 9th, 2001

We are proud to announce the launch of our new Authenticated SMTP service.

With this facility members who pay subscription fees will be able to configure their mail software to send emails via our servers regardless of whether they are dialled into UKLINUX NET modems or not.

We had to rewrite part of the SASL layer to make this work properly for us (we wanted to authenticate based upon IP as well as name/password and our patch for this is available from http://www.uklinux.net/software/cyrus-sasl-1.5.24-pam-rhost.patch)

Details on how to configure popular mail software will be added to our support pages over the coming days.

July 8th, 2001

After a very successful couple of days at Linux Expo on the .ORG stand (see http://www.linuxexpo.org.uk/) we're back and have caught up with most of the support requests that were outstanding.

We received a lot of feedback at the Expo including suggestions for services people would like to see implemented including SMTP AUTH, FTP over SSL and others.

Never ones to sit on our laurels we have decided to review these options and implement those that are feasable.

That started yesterday with me testing SMTP AUTH and deciding that I am happy that we can offer it so from Monday we will be making SMTP AUTH available to all subscription based members.

In the meantime I need to write some basic documentation for those of you who don't fancy doing your own research into how to implement this.

July 2nd, 2001

We've spent much of today and last night fighting with serious load problems caused by one of our sites being Slashdot'd. Normally we can handle the /. effect quite happily however this site was running PHP-Nuke which does not handle hundreds of simultaneous connections too well.

We're OK now however.

We'll be in London this week for Linux Expo. Come and see us there to discuss how we can best serve you, either through service improvements or any other suggestions you have.

Or just come and tell us we're doing a great job. ;)

June 14th, 2001

UKLINUX is now able to offer SMTP delivery of email for our users.

We are now in a position to use SMTP for direct delivery of email to users who dial into our access numbers.

This is available to all of our users regardless of whether you are a subscription based user or not.

Note that in order to use this service you must already have a properly configured MTA (mail server) running - we think that most of our users can meet this requirement.

April 25th, 2001

We have launched a new section to the UKLINUX NET web site.

The UK Linux/Free Software Events Diary has been launched to offer a simple place where anyone with an event related to Linux and/or Free Software within the UK (or of interest to users of Linux/Free Software in the UK) can be let others know what is going on.

The diary accepts public submissions of events (subject to admin approval before they are added to the site) and offers the ability to have reminders emailed to you as well as offering vcal files for download so you can add details to your own local diary/PIM.

April 18th, 2001

After a couple of weeks of delays the announced upgrade to the server hosting web sites for our non subscription members has been completed and now that server boasts PHP 4 as well as the latest release of Apache.

April 1st, 2001

We will be upgrading our non subscription server to PHP 4 this week after having received many requests for this update.

We'll also be updating some other software on all of the servers which will cause a little downtime (probably no more than 1 hour in total).

March 1st, 2001

One of our dialin numbers - 0845 6621698 - is now directed to a new bank of Cisco AS5800 modem racks. They should give good performance - but wont do dual channel ISDN. Please test this number and let us know any problems.

December 9th, 2000

With effect from the 1st January 2001 we are intending to launch a whole host of new services from uklinux.net.
These are made possible by the very kind donation of a server to host the mirror and news services by DN systems (http://www.dnuk.com - if you are looking for a Linux server), so freeing some of the load on our other servers to allow us to offer other services.

More news will follow.

We have also taken the decision that from 1st January you will have to either be dialled in to uklinux.net or have upgraded your membership to be able to connect to our ftp server to upload your web sites.
This is because we have many sites owned by foreign users , and sites owned by users of other free isps, from which we derive no revenue, but which use system and support resources.
These sites will be filtered out when we start checking dialin usage, and the owners will be given the opportunity to upgrade their membership.
This does not affect users with community web sites, who have community membership.

Standard uklinux.net membership costs just 7p per day !!

For further details of memberships available please refer to http://www.uklinux.net/membership

November 27th, 2000

We are now inserting an "Envelope-To:" header into messages via sendmail.

After giving consideration to the best way to meet the requests of many users for a more reliable way for them to determine the intended recipient of a message where they are using fetchmail or a similar POP3 retrieval tool so sort messages for local users I decided that this is the best solution.

I'll update the support page with a "ready to cook" fetchmail configuration suitable for those wishing to use this new header later this evening.

November 6th, 2000
Added upgrade section https://www.uklinux.net/upgrade to allow users to upgrade their level of membership.

October 15th, 2000
myaccount has been updated to include a summary of disk space usage and also to show if your account has been upgraded to a different level of membership.

Also added openoffice.org to the list of mirrors available on our mirror server.

October 12th, 2000
We have a new USENET news server.

The hostname for the server has not changed however we no longer point news.uklinux.net at news.telinco.net.
Many thanks go to ZetNet for their generous provision of a news feed for UKLINUX NET.

October 2, 2000
We've added more great software to our mirror service.
We now mirror the potato release of Debian GNU/Linux.
We've also added mirrors or apache, apache-ssl, mod_ssl, openssl, freebsd, openbsd and openssh

September 27, 2000
We have launched a new mirror server offering FTP, HTTP and RSYNC access to mirrors of the most popular Linux distributions, The Linux kernel sources, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, CPAN, MySQL and many other projects.

The server is called mirror.uklinux.net.

We are accepting recommendations for other packages/sites to mirror and will probably include any that are of benefit to the Open Source/Free Software community.

September 26, 2000
Our ftp mirror has been updated with Red Hat 7.0.

The ftp site contains the full installation tree so you can use it for FTP and HTTP installations.

We also have ISO images you can download to burn to CD.

August 22nd, 2000
Added 'community' section to menu http://www.uklinux.net/community containing infiormation on Linux community projects hosted by uklinux.net

July 20th, 2000 - a first for uklinux.net
We have been asked by our access provider to get our users to test out some new ISDN equipment that they have installed. This is Cisco based and should give much better performance - better 'bonding' and 'transparent caching' apparently - than their previous kit !! We now have another access number that routes through this new equipment on 0845 6621698. If you use ISDN please give it a try and if you have any problems (or praise) - email lance@uklinux.net with details. If you have difficulty connecting to this number then go back to the original ISDN one. Thanks.

July 19th, 2000
https://www.uklinux.net ssl certificate now installed.
uklinux.net gets 10/10 for features in review in PC-Plus magazine - thanks guys !!

July 18th, 2000
After a period of user testing 'myaccount' version 1.0 is now active and available for use at https://www.uklinux.net/myaccount. You will have to be dialled in to uklinux.net to access it. You should be able to change your account details and password and create a mysql database. If you get on to the screen and the only option is 'change account' details then your account probably has not been authorised yet.

July 15th, 2000
I've tweaked our sendmail relaying authentication scheme a little to prevent a locking problem that appears to have been the final hurdle in getting this stable. From now on there should not be any instances of relaying not being authorised within 1 minute.

We're now going to start working on moving over to an SQL backend for the authentication scheme which will remove the 1 minute restriction.

July 13th, 2000
I've added the entire network block assigned to Capital Online (China) to our blocking filter due to continued SPAM from this organisation. No IP in the 210.78.128.0/19 range will now be able to connect to our services.

June 27th, 2000
uklinux.net signup is now available on our secure server at https://www.uklinux.net/signup
At the moment it is using a self certified key but we will have a 'real' certificate soon

June 21st, 2000
We have added a whois server to the uklinux.net main menu.

June 19th, 2000
I have updated the system so that users can gain access to the system error logs for Perl scripts that give errors. Please refer to the support page for details.

April 27th, 2000
Today, UKLINUX NET, became the first free ISP to offer it's users the ability to serve WAP sites from their free web space.

With WAP being promoted as the next great "innovation" on the Internet - although many will feel that a text based minimalist browsing experience is not exactly new! - a great deal of demand is growing for interesting WAP sites to serve information to the users of all those free WAP phone being given out in by various companies.

April 6th, 2000
I have updated the support web page to cover some of the most common problems relating to use of php/perl on websites.

February 20th, 2000
Some of you may have noticed that our web site is looking a little different. We've been working on getting the site working in such a manner that we can delegate responsibility for all of the community aspects to volunteers.

We feel that by inviting the UK Linux community to help build and maintain the site we can guarantee to offer the UK's best Linux portal site.

We've a little more tuning to do and then we'll be contacting those who were kind enough to offer their help in producing www.uklinux.net.

If you want to volunteer to help produce and maintain the UK's best (we hope) Linux portal please email jason@uklinux.net.

January 30th, 2000
I have added a new section to our public ftp site (ftp.uklinux.net). It is a mirror of the Linux release of OpenSSH including RPMs.

I have also installed INN onto news2.uklinux.net and set this up to offer a handful of UKLINUX NET newsgroups.

For now that's all that news2 will offer however we're working on getting an independant news feed in order to remedy the annoying problems with news.telinco.net

January 24th, 2000
I have published RPMS for the Cistron RADIUS server we use here patched with our sendmail dynamic relaying authorisation patch.

They can be found at ftp://ftp.uklinux.net/pub/Cistron-RADIUS/

Note that I have also added Troy Settle's SQL hack patch.

January 16th, 2000
Our service having been launched on new years eve did not fail and neither did most of the rest of the world. I guess that says something about the hype the government pushed about the issue - and perhaps something about the money they enjoyed spending on it!

We now have over 1000 users and most of the niggles with the service have now been ironed out.

We have a status page now where you can see details on any "issues" that arise as time goes by.

December 31st, 1999
uklinux.net is officially launched.

Offering high quality Internet access and a host of services and facilities aimed at the Linux and other Open Source/Free Software communities uklinux.net aims to become the UK's primary portal into the world of Open Source/Free Software and to serve the needs of the existing communities.

December 27th, 1999
Definite Software, the backers of uklinux.net release their patches to Cistron Radius Server to facilitate dynamic sendmail relay authorisation based upon the IP address assigned at connection.

This allows uklinux.net to be the first ISP to allow secure relaying to it's users in a shared network environment.
